Staples Inc., the office supplies chain that is No. 4 in the new Internet Retailer 2015 Top 500 Guide, has a new executive vice president of merchandising.
Staples promoted Peter J. Scala to that job from Staples’ senior vice president of merchandising, online marketplace, a job he had held since November 2012. Scala’s new job also involves the chain’s e-retail efforts. “Peter will have shared responsibility with our e-commerce team, which handles all online merchandising, but through a strong partnership with Peter's team on buying, promo management and replenishment,” a Staples spokesman says.
Scala reports to Demos Parneros, Staples’ president of North American stores and online, and joins the company’s executive committee.
Scala has worked for Staples since 1996, according to his LinkedIn profile, starting as category merchant for the chain. His other jobs there have included director of merchandising and senior vice president, technology innovation, during which he oversaw the sale of technology products and services to small businesses.
In his online marketplace job, he oversaw “the rapid expansion” of products for small- and medium-sized customers, the chain says. “Peter was integral in helping to grow the SKU count of Staples.com over the past several years from just under 40,000 SKUs to 1.5 million through the expansion of our drop-ship program, specifically, helping to launch Staples Exchange, our proprietary new drop-ship platform,” the spokesman says.
