PayPal, part of eBay Inc., said today that 23 national retailers now accept PayPal  payments inside their stores. Separately, the eBay Inc. payments arm also announced a new mobile ordering test involving a California store operated by beverage retailer Jamba Juice.

PayPal says consumers can pay through it via payment terminals inside some 18,000 retail locations.  Consumers pay by either entering the same login and password they use for PayPal online.  Shoppers also can swipe one of three payment cards co-branded by PayPal and MasterCard.

“Delivering valuable digital and mobile payments is alive and thriving, and consumers all over the U.S. will now start seeing PayPal more where they shop every day, including the grocery store and at the gas pump,” says Don Kingsborough, vice president of retail services for PayPal.

The PayPal-accepting retail chains include (with Top 500 and Second 500 ranks noted where applicable):

• Famous Footwear

• Dollar General Corp. (797)

• Mapco Express

• RadioShack Corp. (275)

• Spartan Stores Inc.

• Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (45)

• Advance Auto Parts Inc. (385)

• Aéropostale Inc. (114)

• American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (65)

• Office Depot Inc. (6)

• Rooms To Go Inc. (260)

PayPal has yet to reveal the last two retailers.

For the Jamba Juice test, PayPal will enable consumers with iPhones to use their PayPal apps to place orders for pickup at the Emeryville CA store in the San Francisco bay area. Jamba Juice keeps its headquarters in that city. Consumers can use the app to select a pickup time and to pay through their PayPal accounts; those consumers can bypass the line inside the store when picking up their orders.
