Games retailer Marbles: The Brain Store has hired Essendant’s chief digital officer to be CEO.
Girisha Chandraraj will take over as CEO in May. Chandraraj brings a wealth of digital experience to a retailer that has been selling online since 2010. He has spent three years at business and industrial supplies seller Essendant, No. 111 in the 2016 B2B E-Commerce 300, starting as vice president of digital commerce before being promoted to chief digital officer in September. Chandraraj had also served as executive vice president with art supplies retailer Blick Art Materials.
“As a proven leader, veteran marketer, and experienced e-commerce executive, he will continue fueling our growth and channeling the extraordinary energy of our employees," Marbles board chairman Mike Kazma said.
Marbles Co-founder and former CEO Lindsay Gaskins’ LinkedIn profile lists her as having left the company in January. Scot Fischer, managing partner at investment firm Amzak Capital Management, confirmed Gaskins’ departure but did not say why she left. Amzak acquired a controlling equity share in Marbles, No. 934 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Second 500 Guide, in November 2014.
Chandraraj leaves Essendant, a company with a B2B E-Commerce 300-estimated $612.6 million in B2B online sales in 2015, for a much smaller company. Top500Guide.com data shows that Marbles’ 2014 online sales were $5.4 million, up 170% from $2.0 million in 2013.
Marbles relaunched its website in October 2014, making it more mobile-friendly, after realizing that 40% of website traffic came from shoppers visiting on either smartphones or tablets.
