E-commerce stocks have rough week

Only a handful of e-commerce companies tracked in the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index registered gains in their stock values last week.

Online jeweler Blue Nile Inc., No. 60 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, led the group with a 4.8% gain last week over the prior week. Of the 25 stocks in the index, only seven advanced for the week.

Meanwhile, Groupon Inc.’s stock continues to fall. The daily deal provider’s stock fell 7.5% last week, its second consecutive weekly loss since announcing in March that it was restating some of its fourth-quarter results. Groupon’s stock has fallen 29% in value in that period, going from $18.38 for the week’s close on March 30 to $13.12 on April 13. At the end of Groupon’s first week of trading in November following its IPO, the stock closed at $26.11.

Overall, the Online Retail Index decreased 2.25% last week, a poorer showing than the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 1.61% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 1.99% last week.
