Web sales take off while store sales decline for Books-A-Million in Q3

Despite a decline in overall revenue, web sales increased for Books-A-Million Inc. in the third quarter ended Nov. 2.
The retailer has not yet released its full earnings filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which typically include e-commerce sales. But based on the available data, Internet Retailer calculates that e-commerce sales increased by about 37.3% year over year, to roughly $8.1 million from $5.9 million in Q3 2012. That percentage is based on calculating total retail store sales in Q3 based on the year-over-year decrease the retailer reported, subtracting them from total revenue to find e-commerce sales in Q3, then comparing that number to the corresponding value from last year.
The retailer’s total revenue in Q3 was down 3.5%, to $100.4 million from $104.0 million in Q3 2012, the chain reported this week. That reflects a year-over-year decrease in comparable-store sales of 8.5%, to $92.3 million from $100.9 million in Q3 2012, according to the percentage Books-A-Million reports and Internet Retailer calculations of store sales based on data from the same quarter last year.
For the third quarter, Books-A-Million also reports a net loss of $6.9 million, compared with a net loss of $2.8 million in the same period last year.
For the three quarters of 2013 ended Nov. 2, the retailer reports:
- Total revenue decreased 6.6%, to $313.6 million from $335.8 million in the same period last year.
- Comparable-store sales decreased 9.2%, which Internet Retailer calculates as $299.4 million compared with $329.7 million in the same period last year.
- A net loss of $19.8 million, compared with a net loss of $5.6 million in the same period last year.
Internet Retailer calculates that e-commerce sales for Books-A-Million totaled $14.2 million in the first three quarters of 2013, a 24.5% decrease year over year from $18.8 million in the first three quarters of 2012.
