Urban Outfitters Inc., the apparel retailer that is No. 48 in the Internet Retailer 2014 Top 500 Guide, will move its e-commerce distribution operation north, to Pennsylvania from South Carolina. The move will enable the retail chain to locate its e-commerce distribution operation next to its existing retail distribution center, the chain says.

The new facility, in Gap, PA, along U.S. 30 west of Philadelphia, will have 1 million square feet and open in July. “The new, highly automated facility will significantly increase the company’s fulfillment capacity, supporting strong, direct-to-consumer growth for many years to come,” the chain says in a statement.

Workers at the e-commerce facility in Trenton, SC, will have the chance the move with their jobs.

"As online sales continue to surge, our new facility places us in closer proximity to a large percentage of our direct customers and allows us to service them faster and more efficiently,” says CEO Richard Hayne.

Urban Outfitter brands include Anthropologie, Bhldn, Free People and Terrain. The chain’s web sales increased 19.8% year over year in 2013 to $794.9 million, according to an Internet Retailer estimate at Top500Guide.com. The company did not break out e-commerce sales for its most recent financial report but is scheduled to release full Q4 and 2014 financial results March 9. According to Top500Guide.com, the chain employs Manhattan Associates for fulfillment services.
