Toys R Us holiday hiring will have an e-commerce focus

Multichannel toy retailer Toys R Us Inc. has announced the outlines of its holiday hiring plans, and while it isn’t disclosing exact figures, there will be a greater emphasis on e-commerce-related workers.

Toys R Us, No. 35 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide, broke down its hiring by major metropolitan areas, with New York (4,500+), Los Angeles (2,700+), Philadelphia (1,500+), Chicago (1,200+) and Washington, D.C. (1,000+) adding the most employees during the holidays. Last year, Toys R Us hired 40,000 seasonal employees for the holidays.

A Toys R Us spokeswoman says staffing at the company’s eight U.S. fulfillment centers will be a key focus of its holiday hiring this year.

“We continue to grow online and expect toys to be in high demand this holiday season, as in previous years,” she says. “We’ve placed a greater focus on hiring for our e-commerce fulfillment centers, as well as back-of-house omnichannel operations at our stores, as we prepare for the busy online selling season.”

For the second fiscal quarter ended July 30, Toys R Us reported domestic online sales growth of 15% year-over-year, but did not provide a dollar figure or specify further. The chain’s overall sales during the quarter were flat from a year ago.

Toys R Us is the second Top 500 retailer to announce its holiday hiring plans this week. On Monday, Target Corp. (No. 22) said it will hire 7,500 seasonal employees for its distribution and fulfillment centers and 70,000 seasonal associates for its stores. The 7,500 distribution and fulfillment center hires is a 15.4% increase from 6,500 such seasonal employees last year.
