Toys ‘R’ Us Inc. this week hired a new chief information officer, Phil Newmoyer, to oversee the retail chain’s information technology in the U.S. and internationally, the company says.
Newmoyer most recently was CIO and a senior vice president at Serta Simmons Bedding LLC, a position he held for two years, according to his LinkedIn profile. Prior to Serta, he was a principal at management consulting firm WGroup. Newmoyer fills a position vacated when CIO Dion Rooney left Toys ‘R’ Us in August. In September, Rooney became executive vice president, digital, at Hudson’s Bay Co., No. 75 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500 Guide. Toys ‘R’ Us (No. 35) had an estimated $1.35 billion in 2015 web sales, according to Top500Guide.com data.
“(Newmoyer) will lead the IT portion of our e-commerce platform transition work in addition to other strategic initiatives, including global system standardization and the development of customer-facing technologies to make our stores easier to shop,” a Toys ‘R’ Us spokeswoman says. Newmoyer’s first day was Monday.
Toys ‘R’ Us announced in July that it would bring the operation of its e-commerce platform in-house by the end of this summer. It has outsourced its e-commerce operation since 2006 to GSI Commerce, which became part of the eBay Enterprise unit of eBay Inc. when eBay acquired GSI Commerce in 2011. EBay spun off that business unit and eBay Enterprise last month rebranded as Radial. As part of the rebranding, Radial said it would get out of the business of hosting e-commerce sites for retailers like Toys ‘R’ Us and encourage retailer clients to moves to the e-commerce platform of Demandware Inc.
