A Study of the Top 10 Largest Department Stores in the U.S.

In the last 30 years, so many venerable department stores have disappeared that the remaining department chains seem like endangered species.  But last year, according to a new Internet Retailer study of the nation’s 10 largest department stores, the surviving chains are suddenly embracing online retailing as if it were a life preserver. These 10 chains grew their total sales by a scant 0.4%, but that performance would have been much worse were it not for aggressive e-retailing programs that expanded their department store web sales by 24%, much faster than the e-retailing industry grew as a whole. The question is why are three of these chains still building stores?
