In North American e-commerce traffic, Alibaba’s B2B site ranks high

In a ranking of e-commerce sites by average North American monthly web traffic, it’s no surprise that Amazon.com, eBay.com and Netflix.com would rank as the top three, in that order.
But what may be surprising to many is that Alibaba.com, the business-to-business site of China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, ranks within the top 20—No. 16, to be exact.
The ranking, from web measurement firm comScore Inc., lists the top 16 e-commerce sites for North American desktop web traffic for the 12-month period from November 2013 to October 2014.
Amazon’s multiple sites, include the retail site Amazon.com and its B2B sister AmazonSupply.com, led the way with average monthly visits of 698.61 million. Second-ranked eBay had 521.63 million; Netflix, 280.79 million.
Alibaba’s sites had 30.44 million visits, just below Macys.com with 31.88 million.
A spokeswoman for Alibaba declined to comment.
Andrew Lipsman, vice president of marketing and insights at comScore, says Alibaba’s traffic figure includes all of Alibaba’s sites. But he says that in the United States, which takes the lion’s share of North American traffic, most of Alibaba’s traffic is to Alibaba.com, a site where business buyers can purchase from China-based suppliers, and AliExpress.com, which lets consumers buy directly from manufacturers and wholesalers based in China.
Following is the list of 16 e-commerce sites ranked by comScore, with their number of average monthly visits (in thousands) from October 2013 through November 2014.
