GNC pumps up web sales nearly 40% in Q3

Multichannel vitamin and health supplements retailer General Nutrition Centers Inc. continues to pump up web sales.

 For the third quarter ended Sept. 30, GNC, No. 227 in the Internet Retailer Top 500, reported:

  • Web sales increased year over year 37.9% to $20.0 million from $14.5 million. The e-commerce revenue is for GNC.com and about $3.8 million in sales from LuckyVitamin.com, which GNC acquired in August.
  • Total sales increased 15.5% to $538.0 million from $465.7 million in the third quarter of 2010.
  • Comparable-store sales grew 10.3%.
  • Net income increased 82.4% to $48.7 million from $26.7 million.

Internet Retailer calculates the web accounted for 3.7% of total sales compared with 3.1% in the third quarter of 2010.

“The GNC brand continues to resonate with the consumer across multiple channels and countries, as evidenced by the consistency of our results, particularly in this uncertain global economy,” says CEO Joe Fortunato.

 For the first three quarters:

  • Web sales increased year over year 38.3% to $59.6 million from $43.1 million. The e-commerce revenue is for GNC.com and about $3.8 million in sales from LuckyVitamin.com.
  • Total sales increased 13.0% to $1.56 billion from $1.38 billion in the first three quarters of 2010.
  • Comparable-store sales grew 9.5%.
  • Net income increased 21.8% to $94.6 million from $77.7 million.

Internet Retailer calculates the web accounted for 3.8% of total sales compared with 3.1% in the first three quarters of 2010.
