Gap taps an e-commerce veteran to head up its Intermix brand

Gap Inc., the largest apparel retailer in North America in online sales, has selected a veteran of web retailing to lead its Intermix brand, the retailer announced this week.
Jyothi Rao is the new president and general manager of Intermix, effective Sept. 2, according to a blog post from Art Peck, Gap’s president of growth, innovation and digital.
Intermix sells designer women’s apparel on the web at IntermixOnline.com, and through 35 physical stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Rao comes from web-only flash sale fashion retailer Gilt Groupe, where she served as executive vice president and general manager since 2009.
“She was instrumental in growing Gilt into a multi-hundred million dollar luxury e-commerce business,” Peck wrote. “With her extensive range of fashion and high-end luxury e-commerce experience, we know Jyothi will make a great addition to the Intermix team.”
Prior to Gilt Groupe, Rao served as senior vice president and general manager of clothing brand Calvin Klein. From 1994 to 2006, Rao worked at Gap, including as vice president of Gap Outlet and divisional merchandise manager of Gap International.
Gap and its various brands, including Intermix, Banana Republic and Old Navy, brought in $2.26 billion in online sales in 2013—a 21.5% boost from $1.86 million in 2012—which earns the merchant the No. 19 spot in the Internet Retailer 2014 Top 500 Guide. Those online sales accounted for 14.0% of total sales of $16.15 billion for Gap, which operates nearly 3,200 stores worldwide.
Gilt brought in an estimated $600.0 million in e-commerce revenue, up 9.1% from $550.0 million in 2012. Gilt is ranked No. 59.
