The day before Thanksgiving brought problems for merchants selling through eBay Inc.

The online auction site experienced an outage of about three hours that prevented some merchants from completing transactions. EBay says most of the problems were fixed by 8 a.m. Pacific and full functionality was restored by 8:45 a.m. Pacific.

“The disruption occurred as a result of a public Internet domain change that had an unanticipated impact on processing inside the eBay platform,” eBay wrote. “We regret the fact that this occurrence created a business interruption for some of our sellers and buyers. We will be providing standard protections for our sellers, and we’ll be providing further details shortly.”

Downdedector, which tracks reports of website problems from Twitter and other sources, recorded 2,741 reports of outages at its peak, with the majority (43%) reporting general website issues and others reporting issues when it came to the login page (34%) and checkout (21%).

This is the second time in less than a month that eBay has experienced a service disruption. On Oct. 29, a power outage in a data center disrupted the site for more than two hours.
