Double-digit gains thrust Akamai to the top of e-commerce stocks

Content delivery network operator Akamai Technologies Inc. led the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index last week with 19.9% growth in its stock value over the week before.

Akamai last week announced an expansion of its Asia operations with the opening of offices in Taipei, Taiwan, and Melbourne, Australia. Akamai says it has more than two dozen clients in Taiwan; the Melbourne office is in addition to one in Sydney, Australia.

Online and DVD video rental company Netflix Inc., meanwhile, fared not as well. Its stock decreased 28.0% last week over the prior week. In its second quarter results released two weeks ago, Netflix posted a profit of $6.2 million compared with a $68.2 million profit in Q2 2011.

Overall the Online Retail Index decreased 0.20% last week, bested by the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.85% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index increased by 1.07% in value last week.

Of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index, 15 had increases, while the stocks of nine companies decreased in value, and one, Inc., was flat.

• Vitacost, 10.1%

• Overstock, 7.5%

• Amazon, 4.0%

• Shutterfly, 3.5%

Following are the Online Retail Index stocks that performed least well last week and the percentage decrease in stock price for the week:

• Netflix, -28.0%

• PetMed Express, -13.9%

• 1-800-Flowers, -6.2%

• NutriSystem, -6.1%

• Bluefly, -2.4%
